Your First Virtual Therapy Session

Your first session.

I know how nerve-wracking it can feel to show up for a first therapy appointment. While online therapy makes getting to session easier than ever, it’s normal for thoughts to race- will this even be helpful? Did I come to the right “place”?

Breathe.

My aim in our first session is to hear your concerns. None are too small or too big to bring up. I will listen to you and ask questions about how these concerns are impacting your life. I will let you know how I work and what working with me typically looks like. I will ask you about your hopes and expectations for therapy. We will talk logistics, such as contact information, policies and fees. There is a small amount of paperwork required. Foremost, our first session is an opportunity to start to get to know each other. If you have concerns about connecting virtually, please bring them up.

The most important aspect of virtual therapy is privacy. We can work together to find time in your schedule where you can feel free to express yourself without being overheard. I was a little nervous too when the world switched to virtual therapy due to COVID-19. I’m relieved to say that after over a year online, virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person. I am confident that we can work out any issues. If your internet becomes unstable, we can swiftly switch to a phone call.

Therapy is at its essence a relationship. Like all relationships, therapy is a very personal process.  I believe that good therapeutic work happens when the relationship between client and therapist feels safe and secure. With this in mind, I encourage you to share at your own pace. While we build our relationship, I want to ensure that you feel empowered in this process, as well as making sure we are a good fit. I do not believe that “therapist knows best.” I believe that you have the innate knowledge to choose what you need. I will stand along side you, help you turn over the rocks, clear the muck, and support you through the process of finding greater clarity and direction.

In some instances, we may determine together that a different therapist or treatment will be more effective to address your concerns. Sometimes it is clear in the beginning, and sometimes later on. Rest assured, I will walk you through the process of finding a good match. You deserve the best fit and support available.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
